partitions
A network partition separates healthy computers that can no longer exchange messages. A single-leader system must avoid leaving both sides believing they are the leader.
Single-leader systems often use a lease, which grants leadership only until an expiration time. The leader renews it while healthy; if the leader fails or becomes isolated, the lease eventually expires so another participant can take over.
